Get to Know Yoga Teacher Sierra Carlson

This week, we spoke to Sierra Carlson.  Sierra is relatively new to Blue Heron, having been here for a little over a year.  She has certainly made her presence felt in a very large way, however.  Her classes are growing and Sierra supports Blue Heron in any way she can including teaching classes at farmers' markets, at the first ever Blue Heron Wellness Fair, and at Blue Heron's fundraiser for her alma mater, Blake High School.

Take a moment and meet Sierra....

How would you describe your teaching style?

I teach a class that I would love to take: a combination of movement and meditation, strength and spirituality, as well as learning and laughter. I teach each class to the bodies that walk into the door, as yoga is not a cookie-cutter experience.

What words of encouragement do you have for a student trying to grow/ develop their practice?

Our practice evolves each and every time we arrive on our mat. Some days, we progress, while other days we may back track. Each time we return to the mat, our practice expands no matter how far we make it into a posture.

What is your favorite pose and why?

Pigeon pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana) because I have stubborn hips and this pose tends to sooth them. My favorite variation is with my chest folded forward and my arms out stretched in front of me in Anjali mudra.  Not only does it make my hips happy, but the downward energy of the asana grounds me.

What is the most remarkable event you've witnessed in a yoga class/ workshop/ gathering?

During my teacher training in 2014, we sat in a circle and chanted the same mantra over and over for about 30 minutes. The collective energy of the group and the soothing sounds of our voices all of a sudden became one. At that moment, I understood the meaning of yoga: to yoke, to become one.

Tell us something else interesting about you!

I love three-toed sloths, traveling, trying new foods, hiking, and both of my jobs (teaching yoga and providing mental health therapy to under privileged high school students). Follow my instagram account @an_om_a_day for all of that and more!
