Meditation: For the Love of the Heart

February is the month of the heart, it seems.  Not only does Valentine’s Day arrive with images of cupids, but perhaps more importantly, February is National Heart Disease Awareness Month.  According to the CDC, “Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. People of all ages and backgrounds can get the condition.”  Regular exercise, like yoga, is one of the key ways to prevent heart disease.

And, meditation, one of the elements of yoga, can help your whole body, including your heart.  Meditation reduces stress and the stress reaction process which takes a physiological toll on the body when repeated over and over in a short period of time.  The overloaded system becomes compromised and trouble can seep in. A recent article from Mind Body Green notes, “After an eight-week period of mindfulness meditation, the researchers in a University of Wisconsin, Madison, study reported ‘demonstrable effects on brain and immune function.’” Read the full article here.
